Childhood Vaccinations
No decision is more important than protecting your child from childhood diseases.
Children entering a Mississippi school (from pre-kindergarten to 12th grade) for the first time are required to have had the following vaccinations.
- Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis (DTaP)
- Polio (IPV)
- Hepatitis B
- Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR)
- Chickenpox (Varicella)
If your child is entering the seventh grade, either by advancing or transferring in, a pertussis (Tdap) booster is now required if they have not received a Tdap vaccination since the age of seven.
Vaccinations are available from the health department clinic in any county, or from your medical provider.
Birth Certificates
Students entering school for the first time will need a certified copy of their birth certificate. You can order one through our web site, or contact your county health department or our Vital Records division at 601-206-8200.
Adolescents' Vaccinations
In addition to Tdap, recommended adolescent vaccinations include Meningococcal and Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines.

College Student Vaccinations
College immunization requirements are established by the Mississippi Institute of Higher Learning. Students should check with their college for required immunizations.
Most immunizations are given early in childhood or early adolescence, but college students and young adults need vaccinations, too. Certain vaccinations are specifically recommended for young adults age 19 through 26.
MSDH Immunization Registry
The MSDH Immunization Registry records immunizations received by individuals from public clinics and participating private doctors. Records for many adults and most children are available there for parents and qualified professionals. Returning students will be spending their days in crowded settings where germs can spread easily. Simple precautions can keep kids healthy.
