Living with a heart condition or chronic disease requires planning to safeguard your health during severe weather events. A hurricane can separate you from home and regular medical support for days or weeks.

Reach Out

• Your Doctor/Specialist: Discuss your specific medical needs in an emergency with your doctor well in advance of hurricane season. They can provide personalized guidance and recommendations to help you prepare.
• Local Hospitals: Identify hospitals in your area equipped to handle your emergency medical needs. Familiarize yourself with their locations and contact information.
• Dialysis/ESRD: Contact your dialysis center for their emergency plans and advice. You can also call the ESRD Regional Network at 1-877-936-9260 for alternate dialysis centers, transportation and resources.

Mississippi 211: Dial 211 for information on open shelters, special needs assistance, transportation options, and other emergency resources in your area.

Medication and Equipment:

• Medication Refills: Before the storm, make sure that you have an ample supply (7-14 days) of all medications, including oxygen if needed.
• Emergency Power: If you rely on electricity for medical devices (e.g., oxygen concentrator, CPAP), have a backup power source like a generator, battery backup, or portable oxygen tanks.
• Portable Nebulizers/Inhalers: If you use these devices, have portable versions and extra batteries readily available. Your doctor or pharmacist can help with these supplies.

Environmental Hazards

• Air Quality: Hurricanes can stir up mold and other allergens. Monitor air quality reports and consider staying indoors with air filtration if possible.
• Temperature Extremes: Power outages can lead to extreme heat or cold. Have plans for staying cool or warm, and locate nearby public shelters in case you need them.

Evacuation and Shelter

• Evacuation: Make an evacuation plan ahead of time to organize a successful move if necessary. Consider family or friends in other communities if possible.
