Oxford, MS - University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) Chancellor Dr. Daniel W. Jones recently signed a proclamation of support for the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) Smokefree Air Mississippi initiative.
Smokefree Air Mississippi is a public health effort being led by MSDH to educate Mississippians on the dangers of secondhand smoke and the benefits of smokefree air.
“The facts are clear: there is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke,” said State Health Officer Dr. Mary Currier. “Five hundred and fifty non-smoking Mississippians die each year from exposure to secondhand smoke. Everyone deserves to breathe smokefree air.”
The Smokefree Air Mississippi initiative is currently taking place through local grassroots efforts and a statewide media campaign that includes television, cinema and radio commercials, newspaper and website ads, and Facebook, Twitter and sports marketing with various Mississippi universities.
On October 30, 2010 representatives of the Smokefree Air Mississippi initiative will be present before, during and after the Ole Miss football game to educate sports fans on the effort and gather support. Ole Miss Football Coach Houston Nutt recently supported the initiative by recording a radio spot which will run during the pre-game shows and coach’s shows.
MSDH received a $2.9 million grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to help educate Mississippians on the benefits of smokefree air.
